A Gentle Guide to Sympathy Flowers | Laura King Flowers, Rangiora Florist

White & Green Flower Bouquet, Rangiora & North Canterbury sympathy flowers

Kia ora Friends and Whanau,

This is a topic close to my heart as a florist for Rangiora & North Canterbury. Sympathy flowers are one of the more sensitive orders people find themselves placing with me. It’s a time of high emotion leaving us wondering, what’s the right approach with flowers? How do we pay our respects to those passed, while showing sympathy and love to family and friends? How do we do this smoothly so we don’t make a difficult time more difficult? So I thought I'd put together a wee guide, from one North Canterbury local to another, on when to send, what to choose, and how to make it easy on everyone.

When to Send Sympathy Flowers

There's no strict rulebook here, but a few good moments to consider:

  • As soon as you hear the news – a simple bouquet sent to the family home is a lovely way to say "I'm thinking of you" in the early, overwhelming days.
  • For the funeral or service – arrangements sent to the service venue in Rangiora, Kaiapoi, or elsewhere across North Canterbury are common, and most venues are used to receiving deliveries the morning of. This needs to be organised with funerals directors in advance (I talk to them on your behalf to organise this).
  • In the weeks after – this is the one people forget. The flowers from the funeral fade, visitors stop popping round, and that's often when grief settles in properly. A bouquet sent a few weeks later tells someone they're still on your mind, which can mean even more than the first one.
  • On anniversaries – of a passing, a birthday, Christmas, or any date that might be hard for someone. A small local touch that goes a long way.

What Type of Flowers to Choose

Traditional sympathy flowers lean toward whites, creams, and soft greens, but there's really no wrong choice if it reflects the person being remembered.

White & Green Flower Bouquet – classic, calm, and never out of place.

Soft Pastels Flower Bouquet or the Soft Pastels Upright Flower Arrangement – gentle pastel tones in two formats if you want something a touch warmer than pure white.

Yellow & White Bouquet – a lovely choice if the person being remembered was a sunny, bright soul.

Lots of Lilies Flower Bouquet – a traditional sympathy flower for good reason, with long vase life and real presence.

Wild n Wispy Bouquet – if the person loved the outdoors or had a more relaxed style, something wild and natural can feel far more "them" than a formal arrangement.

If you know the family well, it's lovely to pick colours that meant something to the person who's passed, their favourite colour, their garden, even their footy team. Don't feel you have to stick to white if it doesn't feel right for them.

Styles for Sending to a Home or Service

Different settings call for different styles:

Bouquets are a traditional and thoughtful option to send straight to a family home, and can be made in water filled box vases for easy care and maintenance (see below)

Upright arrangements, like our White & Green Upright Flower Arrangement, work well for funeral homes and services, they stand nicely on a table or beside a casket without tipping.

Low arrangements, such as the Soft White and Yellow Low Flower Arrangement, suit lower positions and are a more modest look.

A single orchid plant, like our Phalaenopsis Orchid in 12cm Ceramic Pot or Peace Lily, is a gorgeous option if you'd rather give something that keeps growing, a living reminder that lasts well beyond the week.

Easy to Look After: Water Box Bouquets

In the middle of grief, the last thing anyone wants is another task, so sympathy bouquets can be made up in a water box vase. These arrive already sitting in their own little reservoir, no vase hunting, no arranging, and are much lower maintenance when families are busy. You just pop it on the table and it looks after itself for days.

If you're sending flowers to someone who's grieving, a water box is a thoughtful format.

Please, Respect "No Flowers"

Sometimes a family will ask for no flowers, maybe they've requested donations to a charity instead, maybe the house is already full, or it's simply not what they want right now. If that's the case, please honour it. It's not a rejection of your kindness. There will be other ways to show you're thinking of someone: a card, a meal delivered, or simply being there.
